Money Mindset & How To Change It

ree

One of (if not the) biggest blocks that hold us back is money. Money tends to elicit a negative response from people because of fear. This makes sense, as money is a necessary part of our lives. We need money to eat, to shelter ourselves, to transport ourselves, and more. Our fears surrounding money might include the following questions we ask ourselves:

  • Do I have enough?

  • Will I make enough?

  • Have I saved enough?

  • Have I spent too much?

  • How can I afford this?

The truth is, money is simply money; it is an object that symbolizes a medium of exchange between goods and services. In other words, it is an object. Objects do not have thoughts or feelings. Our thoughts and feelings that surround money are formed based on past experiences, as well as what we learned from our parents and society/culture. Those fears surrounding money have been cultivated from years of past experience, which makes them feel real and factual to us. But are they actually rooted in “Truth”?

The answer is no. Capital ’T’ Truth is an absolute fact, and our fears surrounding money are not absolute facts. Little ’t’ true is what be believe and think. You change change an absolute fact. This means that our thoughts and feelings surrounding money can in fact change! We do not have to hold onto our negative thoughts & feelings surrounding money, and they do not have to hold onto us. If we are willing to change and put the effort in, we can have better thoughts and feelings on money.

For example: if you have the belief that money is always scarce, this probably leads to you holding back on financial growth such as savings, investments, and even forms of enjoyment such as vacations and other experiences. These actions essentially lead to non-action on your part. You are stuck with the same outcomes because you continue to buy into the same thoughts and feelings surrounding money. Therefore, if you wish to change your actions and outcomes, you need to change your thoughts.

Instead, challenge yourself to think of a more positive and realistic thought. Perhaps it looks like this: “I have always been capable of bringing in money, therefore I believe I will always have enough money to live”. It will take time and consistent practice, but changing your thoughts really does work. With time and effort, those limiting beliefs and negative assumptions about money will have less power over us. New positive thoughts and beliefs about money will thus grow stronger.

We may not be able to change the Truth, but we can absolutely change what is “true” to us. Money does not have to be a negative connotation anymore, so let us choose to think more positively about it and see what life would be like without those limiting beliefs and negative assumptions about money. I am not saying you will be richer or any other grandiose claims; I am simply saying you can have a more positive view on money, which can possibly change how you live your life.
